MULTI-FUNCTIONAL COMFORTABLE WORK AREAS
Today offices require multi-functional work areas and alternate home-like settings to accommodate younger employees. The past two years of Work from Home will affect how employees feel about the typical desk arrangement. 3/4 day workweeks are discussed as workers have come to enjoy mixing personal daily tasks with their work schedule. Hoteling office space for work-from-home (WFH) employees will reduce square footage yet increase spacing for alternative work areas where employees will meet and collaborate. The balance of different work areas, private offices, semi-private offices, and open workstations is yet to be defined and will change with each company, the work they perform, and if WFH is an option.
Newer office furnishings showcase comfortable lounge seating alternatives with flat arm rests to support laptops and Ipads as alternatives to typical cubicles and desks. “Resimercial” (Residential/Commercial) furniture options provide flexible, changing office space options. Reception areas no longer house a receptionist and instead use Lounge seating areas for conferences, staff meetings and when not in use alternative employee workspace. Collaboration work areas with whiteboards are located strategically in the design phase allowing employees to interact and develop ideas on the spot. These can be located with coffee/water coolers or just in a wide corridor with a couple of chairs and a table. Magazines abound with pictures of Google and Apple interiors with alternative furniture options, hanging swing seats, cocoon work cubbies, and ability to plug in at numerous locations as they move about the office. Flexibility and freedom are becoming the new normal for younger employees.
